Nigel Nicholson, an expert in organizational behavior at London Business School
"Today everyone thinks the hero of his own life"
Lluçis Amiguet - 08/11/2010
I have 66 years: the good news is that in all our studies, sixtysomethings seem to be the happiest. I was born in London. I have a funny son of eight years. Hopefully the new British government is somewhat more focused. God is a waiter with too many tables to serve
30 years I've been studying organizational behavior ...
What have you learned?
That today everyone believes a hero in his own life and often against the rest of their group.
Why?
We go back thousands of years to really know ... OK?
Ok.
the gods in the tribe were responsible for everything: rain, harvest, wars ... The individual was left to pray, and what the gods did not decide for you what decided the tribe.
just had to be one more. Your
leaders decided for you when you had to hunt, dance, fight and die for the tribe. If obeyed, could be a hero in your group. And besides, the only alternative was to leave the tribe and the beasts lurking out there.
Most obeyed.
But today the gods are dead - or have held in the consciousness of each, and the tribe has become a widespread bureaucratic administration as increasingly globalized one has to decide most things alone.
For example.
Our parents could only pray and be resigned to accept the children God sent them.
Today we can decide how many children, when and even if we wanted sex.
election is not minor.
If you were born rich or poor, black or white or male or female, your choices were limited from the cradle. Today they are increasingly open to everyone. Progress is the broadening of our ability to choose.
It seems undeniable.
It is.
But
stressful.
why mental illnesses are soaring and so also is becoming more difficult in politics and lead the company.
Why?
For as we have so much ability to choose, we are not part of the tribe, but we have turned the world into a mere stage for one's self, all that we find important, is performed.
We are not happy together.
Thus - and this is my specialty, the cynicism and passivity are common attitudes in human organizations today. Starting with the leaders.
For example. Today
reach business executives not to design and make the best plans for the group, but that the group becomes the stage where they made their own plans. The rest of the company are adversaries, allies or irrelevant.
suppose that the troops think the same.
I tried define decentralization or disintegration process as a group. We have lost the capacity to think and feel in the community. And that makes it very difficult to lead. Today each has its plan and is only satisfied if we met.
Satisfied or dissatisfied.
More often dissatisfied, it is impossible for a company reconcile many individuals trying to make your ego. And we all assume that others, including managers, are also pursuing only their own plan.
In what sense?
My parents talking about their leaders partly suspended his trial. People used to leave a margin of confidence in their leaders: "If the boss does that, but do not understand why, it will be for something good for everyone." Today, nobody thinks so.
teaches you how to lead? Try
my students learn to rebuild the group values.
How?
can
seem contradictory, but a very strong possibility is to dive in yourself to find their own reasons: what makes you run.
And how do you get? Biographies
. Taught to read and write the biographies of various characters and to reflect and make their own.
not appear in business school.
For my course of life is a success in the Sloan School of Management at MIT.
What do you teach?
The great paradox is that the only way to understand yourself is to learn to understand others. You have put yourself in their shoes and walk miles on them.
Why?
Because the only objective view of yourself is in the eyes of others. And know what you think is an exercise in anti-selfishness. At first when people talk about their lives in my course, it's all me, me, me ... Some even say, "My life has been preparation to maximize the benefits of my business."
A very sad life.
But when they learn to think of somebody else, they appear in the biographies of each of them, little by little else.
You say you were gone.
Because others have become mere side of our film, that is, you're only actors and heroes. Nobody admits himself to have done nothing wrong, but if you make an effort of memory, research and sincere reflection, you can discover the bad things I have seen others throughout your life.
You look like a moralist.
just trying to teach to improve business, and it is very difficult to work if only a group of competing egos.
"There's only one way to know yourself, ask others." Nigel Nicholson began his courses at MIT Bio with this reflection is "essential for a generation that will have the greatest ability to decide over their own lives that never had the human being." Nicholson explains HSM forum to learn to lead further demands to know the motives of the important decisions of your life, your biography. "We do much more to tell the life: Explanations. Your biography - he concludes, only be interested if you find out how to get in the boots of those who have treated you and walk with them a few miles. So you can come to understand and then lead your group ".
